The Greenville County Bird Club has a number of ongoing projects that we sponsor or support and encourage you to participate in. These can be great ways to learn more about birding and to get involved.
One of our major projects is the identification and cataloging of all bird species within Conestee Nature Preserve. This effort, led by Paul Serridge, has resulted in Conestee's designation as a Globally Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society, as well as LCNP's emergence as a significant birding destination.
Each winter, the club coordinates the North Greenville Christmas Bird count, part of the Audubon Society's CBC program.
This small festival, started in 2015 and held each spring, is based at Table Rock State Park and is meant to highlight the Upstate's great spring birding, and SC State Parks in particular.
This year, the club is holding a very informal Big Year event. The effort is a collective one, rather than a competition for an individual high species count, to see how many bird species we as a club can observe throughout the year.
Every fall, volunteers can be found at the overlook at Caesars Head State Park identifying and counting the numerous raptors that use the thermals generated along the Blue Ridge Escarpment to aid their journey south.
